Side Effects Of Cyproterone Acetate

Cyproterone acetate (CPA) is a synthetic steroid antiandrogen, luteinizing preparation and antigonadotropin. CPA is a synthetic steroid antiandrogen, luteinizing preparation and antigonadotropin. The drug is mainly used for the treatment of androgen-related conditions because of its antiandrogenic effect of preventing endogenous androgen binding to its receptor and inhibiting androgen biosynthesis. The progesterone effect of CPA is sometimes used, as in the case of the combined oral contraceptive, Diane-35, which is a combination of this drug with ethanestradiol.

 1Indications

1. For women with moderate and severe androgenic signs (e.g., hirsutism, androgenic alopecia, acne, and seborrheic dermatitis). For moderate and severe acne and seborrheic dermatitis, this drug can be used as a supplement when other treatments are not satisfactory.


2. Used to treat hypersexuality in men.


3. Palliative care for prostate cancer that has not responded to other treatments or is not tolerated.


4. Compound cyproterone acetate (containing 2mg and 0.035mg ethanestryl alcohol) can be used as a short-acting oral contraceptive and is also effective for female acne.


 1Side effects

1. Headache, depression, anemia, gastrointestinal reactions, feminization of male breasts, breast tension, weight and sexual desire changes, etc.


2. Can reduce sperm production, abnormal sperm production, resulting in male infertility.


3. When combined with ethinylestradiol as an oral contraceptive, it can also cause breast pain and irregular uterine bleeding.


 1Matters needing attention

1. Caution :(1) renal insufficiency. (2) Previous history of congestive heart failure, angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, stroke, arrhythmia, cardiac conduction disorder or hypertension. (3) depressed patients. (4) Diabetic patients.


2. Effects on children: This drug is contraindicated in children because it can delay bone maturation and testicular development.


3. Effects of drugs on the elderly: elderly patients using this drug, more likely to appear hepatotoxicity, should be used with caution.


4. Effects of drugs on pregnancy: because this drug can cause female male fetuses, it is forbidden for pregnant women.


5. The influence of drugs on lactation: a small number of drugs excreted by milk, breastfeeding women prohibited.


6. (1) Women should undergo a thorough physical examination and gynecological examination (including breast examination and cervical cytological smear) before starting treatment. (2) Liver function should be monitored during medication (especially in elderly patients). (3) Patients with diabetes should be strictly monitored during medication. (4) Studies have reported that this drug can cause the increase of low density lipoprotein cholesterol and high density lipoprotein cholesterol, so it is necessary to monitor the blood lipid level when using this drug alone (especially in large doses).
